Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP)
ViON presents the Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP), the most scalable and the highest performance enterprise disk storage subsystem in the industry. The VSP builds upon Hitachi’s success with controller based storage virtualization found in its predecessors the Universal Storage Platform V (USP V) and the Universal Storage Platform (USP) disk subsystems. The VSP adds automated storage tiering, reduced power and cooling, and increased performance beyond the capabilities of the USP V and USP.

The Hitachi VSP is the only 3D scaling storage platform designed for all data types. It is the only storage architecture that flexibly scales for performance, capacity and utilization of multivendor storage assets through virtualization. The VSP can scale up to meet increasing demands by dynamically adding processors, connectivity and capacity in a single unit. The VSP can scale out to meet business demands by dynamically combining multiple units into a single logical system with shared resources. The VSP can also scale deep to extend the advanced functions of the VSP to multivendor storage through virtualization. The 3D scaling management is enabled by the Hitachi Command Suite with efficient storage management that lowers costs and properly manages all data types.
The VSP moves block, file and content data dynamically across virtual storage tiers. It enables host-transparent migration with storage virtualization and greatly reduces outage windows. Integration with the Hitachi NAS (HNAS) Platform, powered by BlueArc, Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) and Hitachi Data Discovery Suite (HDDS) provides a tiered storage solution unmatched in the industry.
Its highly efficient data center design delivers the highest performance and capacity combined with the lowest power consumption and lower cooling requirements. The VSP’s architecture includes a rack based design that accepts power from the top or the bottom of the rack. Cooling is from front to back providing for hot and cold aisles within the data center. The VSP supports 2.5” and 3.5” disk drives. The 2.5” small form factor (SFF) drives require dramatically less power yet provide high density capacity in a small footprint to support up to 2,048 drives. The 3.5” large form factor (LFF) drives allow the VSP to scale up 2.5 petabyes using 2TB SATA drives.
With Hitachi Dynamic Tiering, new with the VSP, the VSP automates data placement for higher performance and lower cost. Its pools place the right data in the right place at the right time with no performance degradation.
