Open Systems

In order to improve return on capital investment, many organizations are moving from proprietary closed systems architectures and operating systems to industry standard open systems. Most prevalent amongst open systems are UNIX based systems. UNIX has gained its popularity due to its dominance in the university computer science curricula.

The two dominant players in the UNIX computer marketplace are IBM with its pSeries computers, and Sun Microsystems with its SPARC family of systems. Both firms provide a complete family of 64-bit advanced computing systems ranging from desktop to high density symmetric multi-processing systems (SMP).
