ViON Corporation: A Brief List of Milestones
1979: The federal systems division of ITEL Corporation is acquired by National Semiconductor Corporation.
1980: ITEL's P. David Pappert and William Topercer form ViON Corporation as an independent, closely held, small business. ViON begins as a systems integrator specializing in medium- and large-scale systems for IBM-compatible mainframe processors and peripheral equipment.
1989: ViON forms exclusive agreements with longtime partner Hitachi Data Systems (a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. since 1999) to market and distribute Hitachi products. ViON, however, remains independent.
1999: Federal Computer Services (FCS), an independent separate company, which has serviced Hitachi products for many years, is dissolved. ViON hires its best people and becomes a Hitachi-authorized service provider.
ViON can now provide expert first- and second-call maintenance as well as break/fix and professional services on all Hitachi Data Systems storage products and other ViON partner products.
Also in 1999, in a logical expansion of its federal business activity, ViON adds a sales force to support public-sector business in state and local governments nationwide. ViON is able to leverage its experience in government contracts, proposals, pricing and understanding of particular application needs to make this expansion a success.
2000: ViON makes a major shift in its marketing emphasis. After selling primarily IBM-compatible mainframe products for 20 years, Hitachi Data Systems ceases development of mainframe computers and turns its expertise to large capacity storage products. ViON follows Hitachi's lead and starts to offer advanced storage solutions to customers, a successful move that continues to this day.
2005: ViON celebrates 25 years in business.
