NetApp Data OnTap

ViON presents Netapp Data Ontap with best-in-class storage efficiency features such as data deduplication. Since 2008, Data Ontap has been shipping with deduplication for archival, backup, and primary storage. Netapp deduplication works at the block level as post process and it can be run automatic, manual or scheduled to run. It creates a fingerprint database and keeps track of how many times blocks are being referenced and then it removes redundant data blocks within the entire volume. Netapp Ontap deduplication can be run at the volume level so you can pick the appropriate dataset to run it in. In some application types with deduplication turned on space savings up to 95% can be achieved. Netapp Ontap deduplication also works with Netapp Flash cache which allows read cache to only store original data and not redundant data. Starting with Ontap version 8.0.1 Netapp is supporting data compression along with deduplication to address data types that do not offer deduplication savings. You can expect the best savings for backup data, server and desktop virtualization, and file services.
